Spain welcomed a remarkable number of 8.3 million international tourists this June, marking a 10.9 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2022.
The report shows that during the year’s first half, Spain hosted 37.4 million visitors, showcasing an increase of 23.7 per cent in contrast to the previous year, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“The excellent data on the increase in tourist spending, together with the excellent number of tourist arrivals, shows the success of the Government’s commitment to quality and excellence to continue as world leaders in tourism,” Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez pointed out in this regard.
Average & Daily Expenditure Increased in June
Newly released data by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) also revealed that tourists are now spending more, with their expenditures reaching €10,606 million this June, a growth of 17.5 per cent compared to the same month in 2022 and a 9.5 per cent rise compared to 2019,
The average expenditure per visitor was recorded at €1,275, marking a yearly growth of 5.9 per cent. This means there was an uptick of 7.9 per cent in the average daily spending compared to the previous year, reaching €188.
On average, international tourists spent 6.8 days at a time in Spain, a statistic closely mirroring that of June 2022.
UK, Germany & France Remain the Biggest Tourist Markets for Spain
According to INE data, the countries that sent the highest number of tourists to Spain in June 2023 are:
- The United Kingdom sent nearly two million visitors, constituting 23.8 per cent of the total. This showcases a 9.6 per cent rise compared to June 2022.
- Germany followed closely, with 1.1 million visitors, a relatively modest growth of 1.3 per cent compared to the previous year.
- France has been listed third with almost one million visitors, marking a notable increase of 6.4 per cent in comparison to the same period of 2022.
- The United States is listed in the fourth position marking an impressive year-on-year surge of 41.7 per cent, which at the same time makes it Spain’s largest tourist market outside Europe.
Most Tourists Interested to Visit the Balearic Islands, Catalonia & Andalusia
Regarding tourists’ favourite destinations in Spain, the Balearic Islands held the top spot in June, accounting for 24.7 per cent of the total. Following closely were Catalonia at 21.9 per cent and Andalusia at 13.9 per cent.
2.1 million tourists visited the Balearic Islands in June, representing a growth of 5.1 per cent compared to June 2022. The key countries of origin for tourists in this region are the UK and Germany, both contributing 30.9 per cent of the total each.
Catalonia experienced an 11.6 per cent increase with over 1.8 million visitors, 14.9 per cent from France and 13.8 per cent from the UK.
Andalusia ranks third, hosting nearly 1.2 million visitors, demonstrating a 14.8 per cent growth. The UK is the primary country of origin of tourists to this community, closely followed by the Nordic countries.
In other regions, the tourist influx also saw substantial growth, with a 23.1 per cent increase in the Community of Madrid, a 10.4 per cent rise in the Valencian Community, and a 5.2 per cent increase in the Canary Islands.
