Set on a working farm, this restaurant with rooms is neatly separated from the action so there’s no risk of muddy footprints in its artfully simple dining room. Not that it’s uptight – expect big, rustic dishes on its seasonal menu: bone marrow on focaccia; osso buco with turnip mash, salsa verde and horseradish; crisp garlic potatoes; and doughnuts with pumpkin caramel and nutmeg custard. Local suppliers, including Brancaster Seafood Co and biodynamic veg grown at West Lexham are proudly namechecked, as are wines from nearby vineyard Cobble Hill and stout from Woodforde’s Brewery, a key ingredient in its deliciously dark soda bread. Rick Stein’s polished rural gastropub has everything you need: St Austell Brewery ales (try the Proper Job), roaring fires, wood-fired pizza in the garden in summer and cracking Sunday roasts year round. Amidst the rugged landscape of the Dales, The Angel is a polished gem of Yorkshire hospitality and remarkable food. The bar and restaurant weave through a series of beautifully-finished and intimate spaces on the ground floor of the Main house. Upstairs, rooms enjoy the same impeccable finish and views over Rylstone Fell. Faultless service and impeccably finished interiors set the stage for a meal to remember, with seasonal ingredients being served with all the flair you’d expect from a Michelin starred venue. Highlights when we visited in early summer included Hokkaido milk bread with butter, lardo and taramasalata, lobster with kombu and smoked pike roe, and a sublime savoury course of Tête de Moine with sablé, nectarine and sabayon. Holm, South Petherton, Somerset
With its raw plaster walls, Scandi design and plates of torched mackerel, turnip and buttermilk, or baked celeriac, truffle and hazelnut, Holm brings big city cool to rural Somerset. Work up an appetite walking in the New Forest or Jurassic Coast before retiring to this intimate restaurant with rooms. Sat by a gurgling brook in tiny, idyllic Ampney Crucis, its 24 bedrooms – think natural materials, muted palettes, handsome fabrics – offer serious contemporary chic. Close to Krynkl – the shipping container development where Jöro serves its creative dishes of scallop, grilled cucumber, mint and tiger’s milk, or halibut, sauce vin jaune, walnuts and mussels escabeche – the restaurant also operates House of Jöro, a boutique four-bedroom property. Guests can stay B&B, fold in a meal at Jöro or, for the ultimate in private dining, take over the whole house and enjoy an eight-course tasting menu cooked by chef-director Luke French.
