I’m A Celebrity viewers have accused the ITV show of ‘breaking its own rules’ with a prize that will see three of this year’s cast taken out of the jungle and flown off to enjoy a luxury beach barbecue.
The new series of the much loved programme is now close to being two weeks in and millions of viewers are tuning in every night to catch the latest goings on in camp. Drama so far has included Olivia Attwood’s shock exit, just a day after the new series launched on ITV, which she has now blamed on an ‘insurance’ issue and the late arrival of disgraced former secretary Matt Hancock, with his co-stars almost stunned to silence as many viewers at home hit out at the decision to sign him up.
At the start of Wednesday night’s episode of I’m A Celebrity, presenters Ant and Dec informed fans that the campmates would be competing for a trip out of the jungle and a helicopter ride to a beach barbecue, where they would get to enjoy a slap up surf ‘n’ turf meal.
Blindsided by the news, viewers took to Twitter bemused that something like that would be allowed to happen, given the point of the show is for celebs to be in the jungle at all times. One tweeted: “I’m not being funny but having campmates fly out to the beach for a BBQ ruins the whole point of the show.” Equally unimpressed, another critic reacted: “Sending them off for bbq’s !? That isn’t I’m a celeb…. Poor @ITV,” as many others declared which three campmates they thought deserved the prize, with Jill Scott, Owen Warner and Mike Tindall the big favourites.
The campmates were informed of the unexpected treat during Wednesday’s show and then had to take ion funfair themed challenges in a bid to win as many coloured balls as they could to boost their chances of going to the barbecue.
The outcome will become clearer thanks to the Scareground trial, with the public vote abandoned, so campmates themselves had to choose which three of them would take part. Ant and Dec broke that news when they went into camp but what was then meant to be a cliff-hanger for Thursday’s show, turned out to be anything but as the decision was quickly made as cameras kept rolling.
