Cambodia’s travel industry set to get boost with direct flights from Indonesia

At least two Indonesian Airlines are poised to mount direct flights, probably starting with one scheduled flight a week from Indonesia to Phnom Penh within the first quarter of this year.

According to highly placed diplomatic sources, the airlines are Indonesia’s national carrier Garuda and Air Asia Indonesia while a Cambodian registered airline is also expected to mount direct flights to Indonesia during the same period.

On June 21, Citilink, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s flag carrier Garuda, starts direct flights between Jakarta and Phnom Penh. With the new liaison, Cambodia’s network of international airports expands its connectivity to 9 out of the 10 ASEAN countries.

However, the flights were suspended after several months.

PT Citilink Indonesia, operating as Citilink, is a low-cost airline headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia. Established in July 2001 as a low-cost brand of Garuda Indonesia.

Meanwhile, back in July, 2021, Chea Aun, Secretary of State at the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation said that new airline companies from China have applied to connect flights to Phnom Penh International Airport.

Three airline companies proposed to connect flights to Siem Reap International Airport while three applied for connecting new flights to Sihanoukville International Airport, Aun had said.

Cambodia Airports Chief Commercial Officer, Stephen King told Khmer Times last week “We continue to have active discussions with a number of airlines, including Garuda and Air Asia about opportunities in Cambodia.
