Bohra Food Festival offers a taste of tradition

A variety of traditional cuisines delighted visitors at a food festival organized by the Dawoodi Bohra community.

The Bohra Thaal, in which the whole family eats together in one plate, was the big draw on the opening day of the Bohra Food Festival that started Friday.

Organisers said there were over 100 stalls at the festival taking place in North Nazimabad. “In addition to the traditional Bohra community cuisines, there are stalls of delicious food items from around the world, including Karachi.”

There are several activities for children, including a restaurant ‘Cooking Education for Kids’. In this education-oriented activity, children prepare their own dishes. The activities included cooking competitions for children.

The first day also witnessed a roti (flat bread) making competition among men. Organisers said the idea behind the competition was to give a snapshot of what work in the kitchen entails.

The organizers said that the aim of the festival was to introduce the citizens to the traditions of the Dawoodi Bohra community and to promote harmony with other communities. There can be no better option than a food festival to achieve this goal, they added.

The entry fee for the festival is Rs100, with the proceeds to be used for charity.

More than 100 stalls at the festival offered mouthwatering servings of Bohra chicken, Bohra biryani, cutlets, malai khaja, gur papdi, kadi chawl, khichda, bharta, sev puri, spices, dhosa, pao bhaji, vada pao, and traditional beverages.
