125 years of the Rostock-Warnemünde lighthouse: the landmark is celebrating its birthday this year. Since 1898 he has been helping seafarers to find their way around. At the same time, the tower is a popular vantage point. It was a long way to get there.
The history of the beacons in Warnemünde goes back to the 13th century. In 1283, in connection with the expansion of the Rostock port, a lighthouse in Warnemünde was mentioned for the first time.
Sailors complained
Later in the 19th century, when ship traffic increased, the captains of the ships coming to Warnemünde complained that they saw too little. More range was required. Then it took another 60 years before the tower could be built. The construction was approved by the Grand Duke of Schwerin. Cost at that time: 90,000 marks.
Association takes care of lighthouse
The tower was opened in 1898 and initially lit the way for seafarers with a lamp powered by kerosene. If you want to go up, you have to conquer 135 steps. The reward for the effort is a great view of Warnemünde and the Baltic Sea from a height of 30 meters. Since 1994, a support association has been taking care of the operation and safety of the lighthouse.
