On the East Frisian island of Spiekeroog, a protective dune against storm surges is to be strengthened. Coastal protectors are planning a so-called sand replenishment for this purpose. There is currently a cliff in front of the dune.
“In order to effectively protect this protective dune against storm surges, the sand depot in front of the dune must be restored as a precaution this year,” said the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Defense and Nature Conservation (NLWKN). Accordingly, the sand depot serves as a wear body to protect the dune against wind and waves. Around 80,000 cubic meters of sand are to be used.
According to the NLWKN, the sand is to be removed from a flow channel between the islands of Langeoog and Spiekeroog with a special ship, transported to the beach via flushing lines and finally installed. This year it is the only sand replenishment on the Lower Saxony North Sea coast.
Costs for the project on Spiekeroog are unclear
The affected dune is in the west of the island in front of the local campsite. Sand was last washed up in 2017. In the meantime it has almost been removed. According to the NLWKN, it is unclear exactly when the work will begin – possibly in mid or late July. The island community hopes to start at the end of the holiday season. The costs are also not yet known.
