The plans for the Baltic Sea National Park are causing a lot of unrest. The “Free Baltic Sea Schleswig-Holstein” initiative had called for a demonstration on Friday evening.
The planned Baltic Sea National Park is intended to protect selected coastal areas from waste, pollutants and excessive use. But the plans of Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt (Greens) are not universally welcomed. On Friday evening, people from tourism, fishing and sport demonstrated against the plans on more than 100 ships and boats in the Fehmarnsund (district of Ostholstein).
Fear of disproportionate restrictions
The area between the island of Fehmarn and the mainland should be affected, among other things, by the national park plans. Opponents of the plans fear disproportionate restrictions on sailing. In addition, the area is already protected, and according to the demonstrators, the national park does not bring any added value. They also fear a decline in tourism due to, for example, driving bans.
