A tourist has survived a close-call with death when he fell off a cliff in Bali and plunged 40m to the beach below.
The Tomohon-born man had been posing for photos at the edge of the cliff in Nusa Penida when he attempted a somersault but missed the landing and fell to the bottom of the cliff on Monday, local media reports.
Police say a tour guide was taking photos of the man at popular tourist destination Broken Beach when disaster struck.
Emergency services were called but the dangerous terrain hindered the rescue operation.
Nusa Penida Search and Rescue Alert Unit tried to reach the location using a boat, but were unable to access the man because the only entry point was blocked by waves, Tribun Bali reports.
Head of Bali Basarnas Office Gede Darmada said initially one person was lowered down to the victim before another joined with a stretcher.
“We gave initial treatment to reduce bleeding from leg and hand injuries,” he said, according to Detik Bali.
“The victim was pulled up using a stretcher.”
He was then taken to hospital for treatment of serious leg injuries.
Unverified videos on social media show a man writhing around in pain on the sand below a cliff as he clutches his leg and is repeatedly soaked by waves.
“He fell from there,” a man says in one video captioned “selfies are dangerous” as the camera pans to the top off the cliff.
“He’s broken his leg and his arm and how the f*** he survived, I can’t tell you.”
Another video shows him lying on the sand before rescue crews bring him to safety.
The remarkable close call comes after an American tourist died falling into a ravine while trekking the route of Mount Agung in Bali on November 18.
