Croatia accounted for a total of 1.4 million trips in 2022, thus representing 33.6 per cent of the total private multi-day trips, according to Croatian Bureau Statistics (CBS).
The same source also revealed that visiting relatives and friends followed closely behind with 1.3 million trips, making up 31.1 per cent of the total, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
In Croatia specifically, the most common motives for private multi-day trips were vacations at sea, with 1.3 million trips or 45.6 per cent of the total private multi-day trips within the country. Visiting relatives and friends was the second most common reason, accounting for 782,000 trips or 27.0 per cent.
Last year, Croatian residents aged 15 and over spent a total of 24.6 million overnight stays on private multi-day trips. Out of these stays, 18.7 million (75.9 per cent) were spent on trips within Croatia, and 5.9 million (24.1 per cent) were spent on trips abroad.
On average, Croatian residents spent six nights on private multi-day trips within Croatia, while they spent five nights on trips abroad. In comparison with 2021, there was a 2.8 per cent increase in the number of overnight stays on private multi-day trips within Croatia in 2022 and a significant 22.5 per cent increase in overnight stays on trips abroad.
However, when compared to 2019, there was a slight decrease of 1.8 per cent in the number of overnight stays on private multi-day trips within Croatia, and a larger decrease of 35.8 per cent in overnight stays on trips abroad.
As for the type of accommodation, the majority of overnight stays occurred in non-commercial accommodation facilities, which accounted for 15.2 million overnight stays or 61.6 per cent of the total.
Average Spending on Private Travel in Croatia Went Up to HRK 1,886 Last Year
Further CBS figures revealed that the total expenditures on private multi-day trips in 2022 reached HRK 9.1 billion. Out of this total, HRK 5.5 billion (59.9 per cent) was spent within Croatia, and HRK 3.6 billion (40.1 per cent) was spent on trips abroad.
On average, Croatian residents spent HRK 1,886 per private multi-day trip within Croatia and HRK 3,185 per trip abroad.
Comparing the data to the previous year, total spending on private multi-day trips in 2022 increased by 36.9 per cent compared to 2021.
AS CBS explains, last year, there were 237,000 people in Croatia aged 15 and over who went on at least one multi-day business trip. This accounts for 6.9 per cent of the population in that age group.
A total of 457,000 business trips were made, with 252,000 trips (55.1 per cent) taking place within Croatia and 205,000 trips (44.9 per cent) made abroad.
Comparing the data to the previous year, there was a significant increase of 94.5 per cent in multi-day business trips abroad in 2022. Contrary, compared to 2019, there was still a decrease of 52.1 per cent in the number of such trips.
In terms of multi-day business trips within Croatia, there was a slight decrease of 2.4 per cent compared to 2021. Furthermore, there was a notable decrease of 38.3 per cent in the number of multi-day business trips within Croatia when compared to 2019.
