Holidaymakers travelling to Barcelona will face an increase in tourist tax after new rules were imposed.
The city, popular amongst Britons looking for a city break in the sun, has upped its municipal tourist tax. On April 1, Barcelona City Council changed its municipal surcharge from €1.75 to €2.75 per night.
A further increase to €3.25 is expected on April 1, 2024. It’s important to be aware that this tourist tax payment to the city is separate from the general tourist tax payment, which varies depending on your accommodation.
Explaining the tax rise, deputy mayor Jaume Collboni said: “It was the objective sought: to contain the number of tourists and increase tourist income because our model is no longer mass tourism but quality tourism, which adds value to the city.”
Barcelona isn’t the only destination in Spain to announce more taxes for holidaymakers. The region of Valencia said it would be imposing a new tourist tax in December 2023.
Visitors will have to pay between 50 cents and €2 per night depending on their accommodation.
